We are in out Pre-Casting Phase right now. Full casting will begin in August.
Important Note regarding characters and casting:
While others’ portrayals of these roles may be informative, please don’t feel the need to imitate any version you may have seen before. These roles are written with great emotional specificity, but I am eager to see them through a variety of lenses and lived experiences across all racial, gender, and neurodivergent identities. Pronouns listed are derived from the text, but we are open to a broader range in casting. We encourage you to bring your most authentic self to the material, and look forward to seeing your work.

A note on character and casting:
While others’ portrayals of these roles may be informative, please don’t feel the need to imitate any version you may have seen before. Pronouns listed are derived from the text, but we are open to a broader range in casting. We encourage you to bring your most authentic self to the material, and look forward to seeing your work.
EVAN HANSEN: (18+ to play 17) Evan is driven by deep longing for friendship and connection, at odds with the conflicting belief he is a burden to others. Deeply feeling, highly perceptive, fragile. Even through anxiety and depression, it is equally important we see his earnest optimism and determination to make his senior year positive.
(Pop Tenor G2-B4 with strong falsetto)
CONNOR MURPHY: (18+ to play 17) Zoe’s brother. Evan’s classmate. Lonely, pained, bitter, disillusioned by perceived cruelty and carelessness, Connor decides to take his own life. He continues to appear as a projection of Evan’s mind, giving voice to Evan’s hopes and fears, offering Evan solace, kinship, highlighting their commonality.
(Pop Tenor G2-G#4)
ZOE MURPHY: (18+ to play 16) Connor's younger sister. Evan’s longtime crush. Highly intelligent, guarded. She sees the contradiction of her family’s outward affluent social appearance juxtaposed with the disfunction inside it; this may have jaded her beyond her years. She moves through school social spheres with apparent ease and non-attachment, masking the pain of living in her brother’s shadow.
(Pop Sop/Belter F3-E5)
ALANA BECK: (18+ to play 17). A classmate of Evan’s. Highly motivated, hyper-organized, ambitious, kind. While exuding confidence, she carries a deep hidden loneliness. While her ambition can blur into opportunism, it is rooted in genuine yearning for connection and community.
(Pop Belter F3-E5)
JARED KLEINMAN: (Male-identifying, 18+ to play 17), Evan’s classmate. Uses sarcastic humor to hide insecurities. Jared may not even be keenly aware of his own loneliness. Cynical but not heartless, he’s far more emotionally invested in than he would dare to let on.
(Pop Tenor A2-B4)
HEIDI HANSEN: (Late 30s to 40s) Evan’s mother, fiercely loving single parent, burning the candle at both ends. Grappling with the guilt of her absence and the fear of failing her son. In that transitional time raising a 17-year-old where each instinct contradicts the last— to nurture gently, risking keeping him fragile? Or to push him into adulthood, risking a break that may not heal?
(Pop Belter F3-Eb5)
CYNTHIA MURPHY: (Mid 40s-50s) Connor and Zoe's mom. Warm, gentle, welcoming, wears her heart on her sleeve. Longs for connection with her family. Cynthia spends much of her show grieving the loss of her son, and searching for hope in Evan.
(Pop Alto F#3-E5.)
LARRY MURPHY: (Mid 40s-50s) Connor and Zoe's busy and distant father. A lawyer. A man of few words and fewer emotional tools. His relationship with Connor was strained, and the guilt of his failure manifests as anger, denial, resentment. It is important that we meet a guarded, almost cold realist, and see his walls come down as Evan warms the family dynamic.
(Pop Bari-tenor F#2-G4)
