      • DAWN:  Side 1 into Song

      • EARL: Side 1 stop after “LAID”  and side 2 into song

    • DANCE CALL:

      • Focus will most likely be on "Never Getting Rid of Me" choreo and maybe...a new one ;)

      • Dance portion will run no more than one hour

  • March 19th: 12:40pm

    • GENERAL NOTES:

      • These women are trying on Hope for maybe the first time ever. They are stepping into their Vulnerability and Truth to make their lives better. Approach the sides and the lyrics as a play, not a musical; keep it simple and from the heart. Try not to get caught up in intense drama in song or sides.

      • JENNA:

        • Encouraging you to find the moments of hope, possibility and "safe place peace" within the  lyrics.

        • Side: Jenna often speaks her inside thoughts. She's often in her own world (safety, habit). Pomatter is an undeniable goofball and maybe he catches you off guard a bit. Look for some moments of amusement and curiosity.

        • Try not to get caught up in intense drama in song or sides.

      • OGIE: Side -when Becky, Dawn and Jenna are chatting about you, we encourage you to find some “Ogie Style Behavior” to stay active in the scene. Nothing over the top/performative, but something fun.

      • BECKY: Tough love with Jenna, trying to reason with her and show her that there has to be a way out of her situation. Try to reach Jenna as opposed to talking AT her.  Becky common sense and Truth wrapped in a whole lot of love and sass.

      • DR.. POMATTER: With the exception of his song, he is not a traditional leading man. See the breakdown below and find an honest way to his "Adorkableness".  Please be prepared with song (short cut) and scene with Jenna in office.

      • DAWN: Please prep song and scene with the girls. The lyrics are important; find the specific, present moments that share Dawn's inner thoughts.

  • March 14th: 11:50am

    • LULU AUDITION INFO: (see below)

  • March 11th: 3:40pm

    • GENERAL NOTES for JENNA, BECKY and DAWN: These women are trying on Hope for maybe the first time ever. They are stepping into their Vulnerability and Truth to make their lives better. Approach the sides and the lyrics as a play, not a musical; keep it simple and from the heart.

    • GENERAL NOTES for OGIE: Ogie is ALL IN but in an honest and truthful way. Approach the sides and the lyrics as a play, not a musical; keep it simple and from the heart. He leads with love.

  • March 7th: 10:55pm

    • ENSEMBLE CHOREO: The video is mirrored. Nothing needs to be flipped/inverted. You should learn it as if the video screen is a mirror

    • ALL ENSEMBLE:

      • Since all but one of the ensemble will be understudying a Principal role, it would be much more helpful if you prepare material for one of the lead roles.

JENNA – Late 20’s-30’s. Character identifies as female. Any ethnicity. Jenna is stuck in her life as an unhappily married waitress in a small town. Finds some happiness and expression through her meticulous pie baking and her friendships with her coworkers, Dawn and Becky. Lives her life paycheck-to-paycheck, day by day, and wants nothing more than to get away and start fresh, unbeknownst to her destructive husband, Earl. Must have a fantastic pop/ rock voice with great range. Mezzo-soprano F#3 - F5

DAWN –Late 20’s- early 30’s. Character identifies as female. Any ethnicity. Dawn is the youngest of the waitresses and the newest to the diner. Endearing and genuine. Dawn is eccentric, wonderfully unusual, and not so slightly OCD. She sets the tables, painstakingly ensuring each salt and pepper-shaker is equidistant from the napkin holder. Thick glasses, hair parted 14 centimeters to the left. Must have an excellent pop/rock/folk voice. Mezzo-soprano G3 - Eb5.

BECKY–40’s-early 50’s. Character identifies as female. Any ethnicity. The oldest of the three waitresses. Becky has been at the diner the longest. Irreverent, irascible, been there - done that - and made it back. Becky has a wicked sense of humor with excellent comedic timing. Must have a soulful pop voice with an excellent pop belt. Mezzo-soprano Eb3 - Eb5

DR. POMATTER–30’s-early 40’s. Character identifies as male. Any ethnicity. Handsome, endearing, and neurotic. Jim has a warm, and somewhat clumsy, manner. Jenna’s gynecologist. He has a quirky sense of humor, a big heart and, despite the fact that he’s having an affair with Jenna, he is a good person. Must have impeccable comedic timing. Should have a very strong pop/rock tenor that can navigate the musical style of Sara Bareilles with ease. Tenor C3 - Bb4

CAL: 40’s. Character identifies as male. Any ethnicity. A chef at the diner. A “Salt of the Earth” guy’s guy surrounded by gals. Brash, impatient, unsentimental, but somehow charming. Should have a strong pop/rock voice with great comedic chops. Must have a strong contemporary baritone singing voice in the style of Sara Bareilles and have excellent comedic timing. Could possibly cover the role of Joe. B2 - G4

OGIE:30’s, Character identifies as male. Any ethnicity. Eccentric, genuine and lovable. Absolutely smitten with Dawn (in a hilarious yet endearing way) after she goes on a 5-minute date with him. Quirky, incredibly persistent, yet always kind. Should have excellent comedic timing. Must have an excellent pop/rock tenor/baritenor sound. Tenor C3 - Bb4. Ogie’s solo is more “character operatic” in style than high in pitch.

EARL–30’s-early 40’s. Character identifies as male. Caucasian. Jenna’s husband. Earl peaked in high school. He's handsome in a gruff way, but that face is clouded with broken dreams, drowned with cheap beer. Just enough narcissism mixed with stupidity, to be a potent Molotov cocktail that can explode into unexpected anger one second and then turn into a sobbing mess the next. Guitar playing a plus. Eb3 - G4

JOE: 60’s-7 early 70’s. Character identifies as male. Any ethnicity. Strong actor who feels comfortable singing. The owner of the diner where Jenna, Dawn, Becky, and Cal work. A curmudgeonly man who has a soft spot for Jenna (and her dessert masterpieces); he wants her to succeed in life and be happy. Gruff exterior but warmth and kindness within. Joe is a sarcastic and no-nonsense guy with a keen ability to read people. Very funny. Baritenor B2 - G#4

ENSEMBLE: 25-to late 40’s. Any ethnicity. Must have excellent pop/rock voices in the style of Sara Bareilles. Strong actors to play a range of characters from the community in which the story takes place. Some will also be understudies for Principal roles. Movers who excel at storytelling choreography with a strong character driven flare.

OFFSTAGE SWINGS: 28-40. Two non-union swings to cover Ensemble parts. See breakdown above for details.

LULU– To play 4-5 years old. Max height 4’2"  Character identifies as female. Any ethnicity. Daughter of Jenna and Earl. A sweet, carefree child who appears in the last scene of the show. Should be confident with dialogue and some movement onstage. NOTE: Lulu appears in one scene at the end of the show. Volunteer position (+ gas stipend) with a much amended rehearsal schedule.
